Make God Your Number 1 Priority –‘Femi Adebajo
“But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen from your first love! Turn back to me again and work as you did at first. If you don’t, I will come and remove your lamp stand from its place among the churches.”-Revelation 2:4-5
Not too long ago, the Spirit of the Lord brought to my remembrance an occasion before I became a born again Christian and I was having a party in which I invited a live musical band to perform. When my wife and I were dancing our guests spent very little time with us and grudgingly gave us low denomination currencies but spent much time “spraying” the musician and gave him higher denomination currencies since he was singing their praises. In fact they were struggling among themselves to get the attention of the musician. The guests that ignored or gave me little attention were eating my food, taking my drinks, sitting on the chairs under the canopies I paid for in my own house. The musician that they were giving attention was at the party at my invitation and expense, yet he was accorded more respect than me.
This is similar to the way we treat our God who owns all we have, (Psalm 24:1-2; 113:7; 2 Cor 3:5) in actual fact our lives are in His hands, yet we pay more attention to the things of this world at God’s expense. We enjoy the praises of men and the pleasures of the world forgetting that the Lord who made us can of His own free will call us back home anytime he pleases. (Luke 12:13-21).
As it was at the party that the entire guests went home when the party ended, we shall also go home one day and give an account of our stay here on earth to our Maker (Romans 14:12; Hebrews 9:27). The musician praising the guests did not go to the homes of the guests, in the same way, all what we acquired in this world will not be buried with us. We must always remember that our citizenship is in heaven (Phil 3:20).
Many Christians do lay claims to the fact that they love God, yet in terms of their priorities God is probably not amongst their first five!!!. Matthew 15:8 says “These people draw near to Me with mouth, and honour Me with their lips but their heart is far from Me” Take a look at your bank statement and it will tell you how far you are ready to please the Lord –Matthew 6:21 says “For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be”. Therefore, if you truly love this God you do not need to be begged to give your resources (financial, time, knowledge etc) towards the work of His Kingdom.
In conclusion I refer us to the word of the Lord in Galatians 6:7-9 -Don’t be misled. Remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it. You will always reap what you sow! Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful desires will harvest the consequences of decay and death. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So don’t get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time.
Let us pay more attention to the things of God for by so doing you and I will be able to fulfill the purpose of God for our lives.
