God Owns Everything We Have By: Pastor Femi Adebajo Text: Exodus 34:14 (NLT) “You must worship no other gods, but only the Lord, for he is a God who is passionate about his relationship with you”. Let us imagine a situation whereby a rich man finds a woman who has been into prostitution, rejected by the society, frustrated and poor and he decides to marry her. The man gives the woman a new name, put her in charge of one his chain of businesses, open a bank account in his (not hers) name and makes her a signatory all because of his unconditional love for his new bride. The wife cannot have children of her own so the man gives her one of his children and a beautiful house for them to dwell in. The new status she acquires brings her recognition and friends; she is no longer pitied but now celebrated. The wife initially enjoys the company of her husband but after sometime begins to finds it boring being with the same man every day. She starts to look at other men who outwardly appear more exciting than her husband. She now spends time with the son instead of the man. She will rather be involved with the business and see it grow than hear the word of the man. The man asks her to entertain some of his servants in her house but she refuses saying that the house is for her and the son and not for servants. The man asks the wife to give some of his servant’s money from the bank account and she grudgingly obliges but she gives them an amount that cannot even buy her little son a meal. She is so carried away by the fame she has that she often forgets to mention her husband’s name in all she does as she thinks her success is based on her abilities. The above scenario points out how we treat God. He loves us (Rom. 5:8) and brought us out of darkness (1 Peter 2:9), gave us a new name (Deut 2810; Is 62:2), made us rich (Deut 8:18; 1Sam 2:7; 2Cor 8:9), gave us children (Ps 127: 3), promoted and made people to celebrate us (Deut 28:13) yet we fail to give Him our heart. Our heart is still tied to the world. Just like the woman we easily forget that whatever we may be today is by His grace and mercies. The man can decide to take the house, money, name, son and all that he has given the woman if he so pleases. In the same way the Lord that has blessed us can take not only the blessings from us but our lives if He so desire. Let us learn to serve this true God with all our heart and resources for He is the ONLY key that we need to survive in this world.
